Annyeonghaseyo!! This time is about Jeju Island in South Korea everybody! ^^ Korea's most popular and largest volcanic island - Jeju island (Jeju-do) has long been a popular spot for beach-goers and honeymooners. Officially called Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, this premier tourist destination boasts mild weather, as well as scenic beauties of beaches, waterfalls, cliffs and caves. Meanwhile, Jeju has recently won the Global Geopark certificate, and also has been selected as the New 7 Wonders of Nature.
Yongduam Rock, also known as Dragon Head Rock is located on the beautiful coast about 10 minutes from the island capital-Jeju City. Wind and water have helped shape this now famous landmark, but the legends of how it came to be are much more interesting..!!
One legend said that a dragon stole an elixir of immortality from the God of Mt. Hallasan but was stuck down by the God's arrow. It crashed into sea and turned to stone with only it's head left peaking out of the water. This makes wind and water seem much more boring, right?! hmm....^^
Manjanggul Cave is the longest lave tube in the world. It is 5 meters wide, between 5 to 10 meters high and is over 13 km long. The lava tube, which formed about 2.5 million years ago, has been well preserved, revealing a splendid interior that is out of this world. Its has been registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage. Only one kilometer of its total is open to tourists. WHAT!!!Yes, only ONE km... Manjanggul Cave has a variety of interesting structures inside including 70cm lava stalagmites and the lava tube tunnels.
The inside of the tunnel sustains at a temperature of 11-12 degree Celsius, creating a comfortable atmosphere. There are rare animals such as bats living in the tunnel, which makes this tunnel valuable for researchers as well. The stone pillars and stalactites are widely spread and the tunnels shows off the cave's topographical features. The stone Turtle is especially eye-catching because it is shaped like Jeju-do Island.
Hallasan Mountain with 1,950 meters is the highest mountain in Korea and a dormant basalt volcano, situated in the heart of Jeju Island. About 360 parasitic cones, or oreum in the Jeju dialect, are found on the volcano's flanks, creating a remarkable landscape. On the top of the mountain is a crater lake called Baengokdam, which is 3 kilometers in circumference and 500 meters in diameter. The landscape is beautiful throughout the year and a diverse and rare ecosystem can be found at different altitudes. As such, Hallasan Mountain is a Natural Conservation Area.
Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak rose from under the sea in a volcanic eruption over 100,000 years ago. Located on the eastern end of Jeju Island, there is a huge crater at the top of Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak. The crater is about 600 meters in diameter and 90 meters high. The ridge provides an ideal spot for walks and for horse riding as well. The sunrise from the crater is magnificent. Also the Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak surrounded by bright yellow colored rapeseed flowers in the spring is truly a sight to behold.
With a total of 117 houses and facilities, Jeju Folk Village Museum has restored the scenes of the village to that of the 1890's. Among them are Mountain Village, Hill-Country Village, Fishing Village and Shamanism Village. Some of the extensive range of folk items on display are 1,627 woodenware, 1,046 bamboo ware, 1,699 earthenware, 1,544 porcelain ware, 765 wax candles, 921 ironware and 579 other items. The Jeju Folk Village Museum is the island's main tourist attraction where customs of the old days can be explored.
Jungmun Beach has a sandy shore so fine that it is called Jinmosal. The white sand beach is 560 meters long and the water has an average depth of 1.2 meters. Different shades of black, red, and grey are beautifully mixed into the white sand of the beach. This helps to accentuate Jeju-do Island's black Hyeonmuam stones. This area is often used for TV commercials, and the turbulent water is great for windsurfing and other water sports.
Yeomiji Botanical Garden is the best botanical garden in Asia that has a unique southern atmosphere, located within Jungmun Resort. The indoor garden contains approximately 2,000 rare tropical and subtropical plants including Flower Garden, Water Lily Garden, Jungle Garden, Subtropical Fruits Garden, Cactus and Succulent Garden, and Observation Platform. The outdoor garden houses, Jeju Native Garden, as well as Korean, Japanese, Italian and French folk gardens. You can see numerous of flowers, flowers and flowers...
